Now that summer is over, it’s officially time to get ready for the holidays—and I’m not talking about shopping for gifts or preparing meals. I’m talking about your skin! If your skin is dull, tired, or texturized due to the weather or lack of a proper skincare routine, I have a solution that will have your skin shining bright for this year’s office party or traditional family gatherings. Microneeding is a non-invasive skin treatment that will have your skin glowing again just in time for all the festivities.

My name is Dr. Christine Eros, and I am a board-certified family physician. At my boutique Eros Beauty and Wellness in San Diego, I offer full-service skincare, beauty, and health treatments to help meet all your aesthetic goals. Here, I will explain how microneedling resurfaces your skin to have it glowing just in time for your holiday plans.

The Benefits of Microneedling

Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that addresses a wide range of common skin concerns, including:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne and Acne Scars
  • Hyperpigmentation and Sunspots
  • Rough, Uneven, Textured Skin
  • Stretch Marks
  • Loose or Lax Skin

The Microneedling Experience

Microneedling uses tiny needles to create “micro” injuries to the surface of the top layer of your skin. In turn, the body’s natural healing process is activated, creating new collagen and elastin to promote healthy, youthful skin. Microneedling is considered a fractional treatment, which means it only affects a small portion of the skin at a time, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. Microneedling has rapid healing and a shorter recovery time than many other treatments when administered in small sections.

For the best results, I recommend you arrive at my practice with clean, makeup-free skin. One of our skilled practitioners will apply a numbing cream to your skin before the beginning of your treatment to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the entire process.

After your treatment, your skin may feel warm and tight with some redness, similar to a very mild sunburn. These side effects typically persist for 1 to 3 days following your treatment. During this time, use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, avoid sun exposure, and refrain from swimming or strenuous exercise.

What To Expect After Microneedling

Three to five days after your microneedling procedure, you will likely experience some mild skin flaking. This is an integral part of your skin’s recovery that stems from an increase in cellular turnover. Flaking is no cause for concern. However, you should avoid scratching or picking at your skin and apply extra moisturizer to combat dryness. If you feel self-conscious or have an event planned, you can mask these temporary side effects with makeup.

After two to four weeks, you will begin to notice a dramatic improvement in the tone and texture of your skin. It’s not uncommon for these results to progress up to six months after your treatment as collagen production continues to increase.
