There are two basic classes of dermal fillers: hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite crystals. Botox^®

Though not a dermal filler, Botox^® is often used as part of a dermal fillers treatment plan. Botox^® is a neuromodulator used to stop nerve conduction to the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles of expression. Several areas of the face can be treated to help and relax these lines. Over time the wrinkles become less pronounced. Botox^® treatments typically last between 3 to 4 months.

Botox^® is injected with a fine needle, allowing for the distribution of just the right amount of serum to the problem areas. Results can be seen in as little as 3 days, but more commonly it takes 10 days to see the full effect.

We are excited to offer this amazing new method to shrink pores, diminish acne and remove fine lines on the face. Unlike regular Botox^® injections, Micro-Botox^® does penetrate into the muscle. It is delivered into the sub-dermal layer of the skin using a collection of small needles. This delivery method grants the ability to inject in any part of the face without causing weakness to the muscles. It is also painless. The amount of Botox^® is enough to close pores and decrease acne production. It will give you a healthy well-rested look.

What are Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers?

Hyaluronic acid is a great dermal filler for any San Diego residents looking to reduce facial wrinkles and lines. Hyaluronic acid is found in almost every organism, and in human beings it acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients to skin cells from the blood stream.

High concentrations of this natural substance are found in the soft connective tissue in fluid surrounding your eyes. It also resides in some joint fluids and cartilage, as well as your skin tissue. By extraction and reformulation, it has become one of the more popular injectable fillers. It is also used for relief from arthritis by injecting directly into the aching joints. In our San Diego office, we use Restylane^® hyaluronic acid fillers.

Hyaluronic acid is not an animal source derivative. After injection, dermal fillers support facial structures and tissues that have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. They really do “fill” out the underlying structures that have lost volume over the years. They also bring moisture to the skin’s surface for a fresh and supple appearance.

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler Products

Restylane^® can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, like the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane^® may also be used for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years. Results can last between 6 to 8 months.

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler Candidates

Hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatments have helped San Diego residents improve their appearance temporarily, but it is not a permanent solution and it won’t stop the aging process.

Some of our dermal fillers patients use our Hyaluronic Acid Treatments to fill out deep wrinkles and volume loss in the face. This is often called a “liquid facelift” – and is used as way to keep severe aging at bay until a surgical facelift may be more appropriate. It’s a great way to see some impressive changes and improvements in your appearance if you’re not ready to go under the knife.

Before considering our dermal filler hyaluronic acid treatment, be aware one treatment might not be enough to achieve the results you seek. Depending your body’s reaction to the procedure, you may need additional dermal filler injections. We find that most patients achieve their desired outcome within three dermal filler treatments.

The dermal filler injections last between six months and two years, depending on the fillers used, your lifestyle, body chemistry, and the rate at which you are naturally aging. To maintain your youthful appearance, you may consider hyaluronic injections two to three times a year.

What are Radiesse^® Injections?

Radiesse^® dermal fillers are used to smooth moderate to severe face wrinkles and folds, like nasolabial folds (the creases that extend from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth).

Radiesse^® utilizes calcium hydroxylapatite which is found in the human bone and is a mineral-like compound. It’s used to fill:

• Moderate-to-severe creases like nasolabial folds,
• Marionette lines
• Frown lines
• Cheeks and other facial contours.

Because calcium hydroxylapatite is biosynthetically produced (no animal or animal products used) there is no skin testing required and it has a lower risk for an allergic reaction.

Side effects are rare with this type of dermal filler and is known to produce a natural result that doesn’t migrate!

How do Radiesse^® Injections Work?

Calcium-based microspheres are suspended in a water-based gel to form calcium hydroxylapatite.

First used in dentistry and reconstructive surgery, this dermal filler has gained a well-established safety record. It acts as a scaffold upon which your own collagen then grows. Over time, the particles dissolve through normal metabolic processes into calcium and phosphate ions, resulting in a youthful glow.

Recovery

Most of our facial, dermal filler injections do not involve a significant recovery process. However, the patient should be aware of all aspects of this cosmetic dermatology procedure, including its potential risks and expected results, to make an informed decision. Dr. Eros provides facial filler injections to patients in San Diego, and offers free consultations.

The cosmetic effect of your dermal filler injections may be noticed immediately after treatment. Minor bruising and swelling are common, but subside quickly. With deep layer injection, the skin will swell subtly and reduce facial creases and wrinkles.

Swelling will vary from one patient to another depending on the kind dermal filler used, number of injections, and areas involved. In most patients, redness, swelling, and bruising will diminish fully within one week. Cold compresses and ice packs will help to reduce swelling if applied within the first few days.

One should avoid lying down for the first few hours after injections to allow the dermal filler gel to settle into the treated areas, and not spread into surrounding sites. Dr. Eros will advise you to refrain from rubbing or massaging areas for a minimum of twenty-four hours.

You may wear makeup the day after injections to camouflage any swelling or bruising, but refrain from alcohol based products. Smokers must quit smoking for a week before and a week after procedure to endure optimal healing and avoid complications. Blood thinners should be avoided as well as sun exposure. SPF 30 or above should be applied daily – San Diego is a sunny area!

Dr. Eros may recommend a dermal fillers follow up treatment to fill any creases or wrinkles in the face that may not have been successfully treated in the first injection treatment. The results of a single office treatment of dermal fillers will usually last for between 6 months to two years, depending on several factors including the dermal filler used.

The strength of the dermal filler makes a key difference to the longevity of results. For instance, dermal fillers with a higher concentration of active ingredients, including fillers for mid-face volumizing, may create sustainable results lasting for up to two years. What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

As we age, we begin to see the effects of lost facial volume in prominent areas of the face. This phenomenon contributes to wrinkles, lines, hollow temples, sunken eyes, thinner lips, and an overall older appearance. Volume loss comes from bone resorption, fat loss and muscle loss along with a decrease in collagen. Fillers can restore this volume loss, smooth out folds and wrinkles, and improve contours to achieve natural results without altering facial expressions. Some fillers are also excellent for correcting scars.

How long do dermal filler results last?

The effects of dermal fillers are long-lasting, but not permanent. They can continue improving your appearance for anywhere between six to 18 months, depending on several different factors such as your age, type of filler used, quantity used, lifestyle, the treatment area, and the rate at which your body metabolizes the fillers.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Dr. Eros will apply a topical anesthetic cream to the skin before administering your treatment to ensure your experience is as comfortable as possible. She also uses lidocaine blocks to make the procedure more comfortable. Many filler formulations include a small amount of lidocaine to help ease any discomfort once injected into the skin. Afterward, there may be some tenderness and swelling at the injection sites, but you can remedy these by icing the area or taking over-the-counter pain medication approved by Dr. Eros.

Will I look natural?

When applied by a trained injector, in precise quantities, and in targeted locations, your results can appear beautiful, natural, and youthful. The goal of getting fillers is not to make you look like a completely different person, but rather to enhance your existing facial features.
