1. What’s Does Kybella® Do?
Kybella® is meant to treat submental fat, or what you know as a “double chin.” The area below the chin is a natural area for fat deposits to settle as a result of weight gain, aging, or genetics. What makes a double chin particularly stubborn is that there is no way to directly target the area through diet and exercise. Regular diet and exercise can help to reduce it; however, it’s not a guaranteed method.
Kybella® works by destroying the fat cells so that your body can gradually eliminate them over the following 8 to 12 weeks.
2. Who Is Eligible for Kybella®?
While it does require a consultation first, just about anyone with a stubborn double chin is eligible for Kybella®. As long as you’re at or above the age requirement, are in good health, and have no skin ailments that might prevent you from having this treatment, Kybella® could be a great solution for you.
3. What is Kybella® Made Of?
Kybella® is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid (also known as stomach acid) that your body creates on its own to break down dietary fat. When it is injected into submental fat, it produces mild swelling, which subsides as your body naturally expels the fat cells. This makes Kybella® a much safer option and less susceptible to potential complications that might arise with more invasive procedures like liposuction.
4. What Is a Kybella® Treatment Like?
Kybella® treatments are quick and convenient. The treated area will be cleaned and numbed prior to the injections so that you’re comfortable during the treatment. I’ll begin administering the injections throughout your chin, and the whole treatment generally takes no more than 20 or 30 minutes.
Following your treatment, you may notice some swelling in the area, which will increase over the next 24 hours. This is a perfectly natural response to the treatment and should subside significantly over the next 5-7 days.
5. How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients have 2-3 treatments to get their optimal results. However, results differ from patient to patient. If you still see some lingering submental fat after one treatment, the area can be re-treated within six weeks between each session.
6. Are Kybella® Results Permanent?
Yes. Kybella® causes a number of fat cells to die, and your body will naturally expel them. If in the future you experience significant weight gain following your treatment, you may see any fat cells left behind after your treatment expand. It’s essential to keep in mind that Kybella® is intended to eliminate as many fat cells as possible, but it’s nearly impossible to eliminate all of them. You must stay at a healthy weight to maintain your results.
7. Can Other Areas Be Treated with Kybella®?
Yes. Kybella® can also work on other small pockets of fat that you want to get rid of, like bra rolls, armpits, and the lower belly. I tcan also safely be combined with other non-invasive fat reduction procedures like SculpSure®.
