Have you noticed more lines and wrinkles forming on areas of your face, like between your eyes, forehead, and mouth? These are all typical signs of aging that my patients want to address when they come for their consultation. Think of your skin like a rubber band. When you first take it out of the package, its structure is fresh and new, allowing it to hold its form after being stretched and manipulated. Now keep stretching and manipulating it; you’ll begin to see the material crease and break down. The same is true for your skin. The more expressions you make, that is where you’re going to experience creasing the most.
You’ve probably heard of Botox® before, whether from a celebrity, on social media, or in your daily life. Botox® injections are only rising in popularity for their ability to revive youthful skin without surgery. If you’ve never had Botox® before but are interested, here are a few beginner tips.
What Is Botox®?
Botox® is a neuromodulator that, when injected into facial muscles, effectively blocks nerve signals to the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Botox® can be used as a preventative treatment when injected early or to help rejuvenate skin that is beginning to show signs of aging. Treatments can include forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, laugh lines, drooping eyebrows, bunny lines, and much more. A common misconception is that Botox® injections can add volume to your skin and restore sunken areas of the face. While Botox® is incapable of that kind of restoration, dermal fillers can add volume back to the skin. During your consultation with me at Eros Beauty and Wellness in San Diego, CA, we can discuss whether dermal fillers or Botox® injections are suitable for you or a combination of both.
Botox® Preparation Tips
Medications
Before your appointment, it’s important that you provide me with a list of medication, supplements, and herbal remedies that you are taking at the time, as some things can have an adverse effect on Botox®. For example, over-the-counter medications and supplements like aspirin and ibuprofen are types of blood thinners and should be discontinued for at least four days before your Botox® treatment to help reduce bruising.
How To Prep Your Skin
Stay away from chemical peels, sun tans, or exfoliation treatments leading up to your Botox® appointment, as these can interfere with your results. The best way to prep your skin is by properly moisturizing it and drinking plenty of water to keep it hydrated. These will aid in your results.
Plan Ahead
Botox® injections are a non-invasive procedure that allows most people to resume their normal activities after appointments. However, if it’s your first Botox® treatment, I recommend that my patients go home and relax, as new experiences can always be exciting and overwhelming. I also advise that my patients schedule their Botox® appointments a couple of weeks before a big event to allow any bruising to subside and for the Botox® to take its full effect.
Do your research
Botox® is the number one non-invasive cosmetic procedure in the United States, and because of its popularity, spas, boutiques, salons, and the like are offering treatments. When researching where to have your Botox® injections done, make sure it’s with a certified specialist with positive reviews. As a locally trained physician with years of Botox® injection experience, I know the proper amount of filler to use and where on the facial structure it will work and look the best.
What To Expect From Your First Botox® Treatment
On the day of your appointment, we will create a plan of specific areas you want to target with Botox®. Then, to ensure your comfort, I can apply a topical numbing agent to your skin. Next, I inject small doses of Botox® into the problem areas with an ultra-fine needle. With the numbing agent, you shouldn’t be able to feel more than light pressure, possibly mild stinging. Once we’ve targeted all your areas of concern, you’ll be free to go home with instructions on how to care for your skin and manage any discomfort.
