Tips for Taking Care of Your Lip Augmentation Results

If you’re like many of my clients who have experienced the incredible aesthetic benefits of lip fillers, you’re probably wondering how to prolong your lip augmentation results. I like my clients to understand that while lip fillers do not last forever, there are simple, convenient ways to maintain your fuller, more youthful pout until it’s time for a touch-up treatment in eight months to a year.

To get the extra mile from your lip augmentation, you’ll need to make a few simple lifestyle changes. When you take care of your skin, you’ll see the full benefits and long-lasting results of your augmentation.

4 Ways to Prolong Your Lip Augmentation

1. Follow Your Aftercare Instructions

After my patients receive their lip injections, I provide them with specific instructions to follow. Some common pieces of advice you’ll find within these instructions include avoiding alcohol or strenuous activity for 24 hours to prevent bruising or bleeding; staying hydrated; and applying ice as needed to reduce swelling. I may also recommend massaging the area to soften or evenly distribute the filler.

2. Use Sun Protection

We’ve known for a long time that excess sun exposure can be dangerous and damaging to the skin. However, many people are surprised to learn that UV rays can essentially dry out the hyaluronic acid within lip fillers. Since lip skin is so thin, the hydration within them is more sensitive to sun exposure and susceptible to damage. To extend your lip filler results, apply an SPF lip balm throughout the day to shield them from the sun’s rays.

3. Stay Hydrated and Eat a Balanced Diet

Drinking water throughout the day and enjoying balanced, nutritious meals is excellent for your overall health — including your lip fillers. Sugar binds to collagen and elastin, triggering inflammation within the skin. This phenomenon can cause hyaluronic acid fillers to break down faster, so eating a well-balanced diet that is low in refined sugar can help maintain your lip filler results. Staying hydrated can also improve your skin’s overall health by adding moisture.

4. Schedule Maintenance Injections

No matter how diligently you work to take proper care of your skin and support your lip filler results, these products are not permanent and will inevitably break down. If you want to maintain long-term results, you’ll need to return for routine injections. Lip fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the product you choose. During your consultation with me, we can discuss the different products I offer and how often maintenance injections will be necessary for you.
