Dermal fillers are most often used to replace volume that’s been lost in the face as a result of aging. They are safe, effective, and most often composed of a substance called hyaluronic acid that is found naturally inside the body and responsible for keeping our skin plump, full, and smooth.
Traditionally, dermal fillers have been injected using sharp tip needles, but it’s been known to cause more severe bruising, swelling, and pain amongst other uncomfortable and potentially dangerous reactions, especially when done by an inexperienced doctor. Because of these reasons, I have started to incorporate another option at my office, Eros Beauty and Wellness.
The blunt tip cannula approach is a safe, less painful option than the traditional needle approach, and the results are just as stunning. Keep reading to learn the difference between these two injection methods.
Sharp Tip Needles For Dermal Fillers
When using needles, multiple injection points are required, which heightens the risk of hitting a vein. If a vein is hit with a needle, there’s a higher chance of more severe bruising after the procedure. Sharp tip needles can also result in trauma to the skin, causing more intense swelling, particularly when used on the lips. Along with pain, bruising, and swelling, other risks that can occur, albeit rare, include skin irregularities post-injection, infection at the injection site, and tissue damage which can occur when a filler is injected into a blood vessel by accident.
Blunt Tip Cannulas For Dermal Fillers
To avoid significant side effects, and as a way to always keep your safety and comfort in mind, here at Eros Beauty and Wellness, I choose to incorporate cannulas into my dermal filler regimen. I prefer this method because cannulas have a rounded, blunt end that allows them to bend and slope when inserted into the skin rather than the rigid form of a needle. This has been proven to cause less building pain and swelling than regular needles. They are also less damaging to arteries, therefore decreasing the risk of necrosis and blindness associated with traditional needles significantly.
Benefits of Using Cannulas VS Needles
- Decreased Risk of Bleeding and Bruising: Sharp needles are capable of piercing veins and arteries beneath the skin. Since blunt cannulas simply push aside any arteries and veins encountered beneath the skin, there’s a reduced risk of bleeding and bruising.
- Safer Option: When using needles for filler injections, one of the potential complications is accidentally injecting filler into an artery, which can cause tissue death, or in extreme cases, blindness. Cannulas do not pierce arteries, so they offer a much safer option.
- Minimal Downtime: Injections with needles can cause swelling and bruising during the procedure, and they often are associated with some social downtime. Since the cannula injection method cuts down on swelling and bruising, you’re able to go about your life with less downtime post-procedure.
